Superior quality control is
emphasized throughout the manufacturing process of Rooibos Tea. From planting to
harvesting to final delivery of the finished product, the
most stringent controls monitor every stage of production to
ensure our customers get the purest, highest quality of
Rooibos Tea.
1) Rooibos Tea is unique to
South African and found only in
Western Cape's Cedarberg area.
2) It is marketed in bulk only by
Rooibos Tea Natural Products Ltd. and its headquarters is in
Clanwilliam, 220 km north west of Cape Town.
3) From February to
March, the seeds are sown in seed-beds. After germination,
seed-lobes appear, followed by needle-like leaves. In June and July,
the 10-20 cm height plants are planted in rows in plantations and
looked after very carefully.
4) Seeds can also be sown directly in
plantations. The plant is pruned 18 months later. Therefore, it's
harvested annually, when branches are cut off 35 cm from the ground.
5) The cutting are bound in sheaves
and sent to the processing slabs. Every 5 years, plantations are
re-established.
6) A cutting machines cut the sheaves
into lengths of 5mm, a pre-requisite for packing.
7) After airing, the tea is left in
heaps of 15-20 cm height to ferment, when oxygen makes the tannin
react with the enzymes, creating heat and moisture. Temperature is
maintained at 30-35°C.
8) After about 8 hours, the tea
chanages from green to red-brown, developing a distinctive sweet
flavour. It is then spread out on concrete slabs to dry in the sun.
9) The dry tea is then sucked up by
special suction machines. It is then delivered to Rooibos Tea
Natural Products Limited as a mixture of twigs, pulverised tea and
pure tea.
10) The tea is sorted according to
length, colour, flavour and taste into different quality grades of
Super, Choice and Standard and then pooled.
11) The tea is sifted by a special
machine, leaving behind only pure tea which is then continuously
mixed in special silos to ensure uniform quality.
12) The tea purified by steam
pasteurization and dried by running over a hot air bed dryer.
13) The tea is packed in 20kg and 35kg
woven polypropylene bags after weighing in automatic scales.
14) The tea is then delivered to
various international packers.
